FAQ

1 Why can't I find a specific item that I’m searching for?

There are several reasons why a specific item may not be found. For example, some items broadcast by CBC are owned by third parties and cannot be licensed. In other cases, there are issues with rights that prohibit external licensing. As well, archival methods from previous decades were not always as thorough as today, and some files have been damaged and lost over time. Please contact us if you are searching for something that you believe belongs to CBC but is not showing up in the results.

2 Why are there fees to use CBC’s archive?

Maintaining a library of millions of audio, video, photos, and texts is resource-intensive, and is primarily intended for internal production support. External access to CBC's archive is offered on a self-sustaining basis, in accordance with standard industry practices and at competitive fair market value.

3 Are there any other clearances or permissions associated with licensing archival footage?

There may be additional clearances, residuals, or reuse fees, especially if you are using music and scripted footage. You may also be required to obtain permission from interview subjects and performers.

4 Can I obtain free archive materials for my non-profit organization or low-budget production?

As stewards of taxpayer assets and out of fairness for the many worthwhile causes that reach out to us, we are unable to single out anyone for free usage. We will discuss with you what can be achieved within your budget.

5 Can I use your archive under the fair dealing exception?

As the copyright holder, we do not make determinations about third party fair dealing.

6 I found something elsewhere online that may belong to CBC. Can I license it?

Please try to use our search to see if you can find the item. If unsuccessful, please submit a request and we will see if we can locate it, clear and license it for your use.

7 Can I come to your office to search the archive?

This is not a service we offer. However, we have undertaken a mass digitization project and most content is now searchable digitally.

8 How do I find photos and text?

Please submit a request for photo and text licensing.

9 Can I obtain a copy of a program for personal use?

Please note that we can only provide copies of material for personal use if you or a family member appeared in it. The more information about the material you can provide us, the faster and easier the process will be. Please use our search to see if you can find the specific program. Please note that you will be required to sign a waiver stating that you will only use the content for personal listening/screening purposes and you are not able to share or post the content online or use it in any other manner.
